We are pleased to announce that Community Drug and Alcohol Recovery Services (CDARS) has become Community Discovery and Recovery Services.
This change of name reflects the natural evolution of our organisation and the wider range of support we now provide. CDARS began 40 years ago as a psychosocial service supporting individuals experiencing substance and alcohol misuse issues, as well as their families and loved ones.
Over the decades, we have continued to grow and develop in response to the needs of the communities we serve. Today, our work extends across mental health, neurodiversity, and substance and alcohol misuse, providing compassionate, person-centred support to individuals, families, and communities.
While our name has changed, our commitment remains the same. Our ethos, values, and dedication to helping people discover their strengths, build recovery, and achieve their goals continue to guide everything we do.
We look forward to this next chapter as Community Discovery and Recovery Services, continuing to provide support, understanding, and hope to those who need us.
Mental health is not just a word. It is not a statement, and it is not something that can simply be covered up like a plaster.
Mental health is about how we feel, think and experience life. Our moods and emotions can change from day to day, and sometimes even from moment to moment.
We cannot make assumptions about someone's mental health simply because we see them smiling or appearing happy when they are out in public. A smile does not always mean that someone is in a happy place.
Beyond the Mask
We all wear different masks at different times. These masks can represent different moods, feelings and experiences – both internal and external. Sometimes, the person we see on the outside can be very different from what they are experiencing on the inside.
Someone may smile, laugh, go to work, socialise with friends and appear to be coping, while privately struggling with sadness, anxiety, loneliness, stress or other mental health difficulties.
This is why it is important to be kind and not judge people by what we see.
Sometimes, simply asking someone, “How are you really feeling?” can make a difference. More importantly, we should be willing to listen without judgement.
There is no single face of mental health, and there is no particular way that someone experiencing mental health difficulties must look.
Behind every smile, there may be a story we do not know.
So, let's look beyond the mask.
Let's be kind.
Let's listen.
Let's support one another.
And let's create a world where people feel safe to talk about their mental health without shame or fear.
Finding Mental Health Support in South West London
Mental health difficulties can affect anyone, at any stage of life. At times, it can feel difficult to know where to turn or who to talk to.
Finding the right mental health support can be an important first step.
CDARS provides mental health support across Merton, Wandsworth, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston and Croydon, helping people access support within their local communities.
For some people, having somewhere safe and welcoming to talk can make a real difference. Community-based support can provide an opportunity to meet others, share experiences, build connections and explore different ways of managing difficult times.
You do not have to wait until things become overwhelming before asking for help.
Asking for support is a strength, not a weakness. There is no shame in saying, “I need some support.”
Mental Health Support in Merton
Within Merton, CDARS provides welcoming community spaces where people can talk, connect with others and receive support without judgement.
Sunshine Recovery Café – Wimbledon Chase
Sunshine Recovery Café in Wimbledon Chase provides a safe and welcoming environment for people experiencing mental health difficulties.
It is a place where individuals can meet staff and other people with lived experience, share their experiences and explore their own journey towards recovery.
Sunrise Recovery Café – Mitcham
Sunrise Recovery Café in Mitcham offers another welcoming space where people can come together, talk openly and find support during difficult times.
Sometimes, when we are experiencing difficulties with our mental health, it can feel as though we are surrounded by darkness and that there is no way forward. Having somewhere safe to go and someone willing to listen can be the first step towards finding a different path.
You don't have to face those difficulties alone.
Mental Health Support Across Merton, Wandsworth, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston and Croydon
CDARS supports people experiencing mental health difficulties across Merton, Wandsworth, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston and Croydon.
While our Recovery Cafés provide community-based spaces in Merton, our wider range of services helps people access mental health support across South West London.
The support someone needs will be different for everyone. For some, talking to someone can be the first step. For others, connecting with people who understand their experiences, developing coping strategies or finding ongoing support within the community can help them move forward.
What matters is knowing that support is available and that you do not have to navigate difficult times on your own.
Creating Safe Spaces for Mental Health
Creating welcoming, non-judgemental spaces where people feel able to talk openly about their mental health is an important part of breaking down stigma.
When people feel listened to and understood, they may feel more able to talk about what they are experiencing and take steps towards recovery.
Sometimes, hearing another person's story can give us the courage to take the first step ourselves.
A conversation can be the beginning of a connection.
A connection can be the beginning of hope.
And asking for help can be the beginning of recovery.
You Don't Have to Hide Behind the Mask
Mental health affects everyone differently. You cannot always tell how someone is feeling simply by looking at them.
Someone who appears happy may be struggling.
Someone who seems to be coping may need support.
Someone who is smiling may simply be doing their best to get through the day.
So, let's look beyond the mask.
Let's ask how people are really feeling.
Let's listen without judgement.
Let's be kind.
And let's make sure people know that support is available.
If you are looking for mental health support in Merton, Wandsworth, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston or Croydon, CDARS is here to help people find support within their local community.
You never truly know what someone may be going through behind the smile.
You don't have to walk through the darkness alone.
There is support, there is hope, and there is always a reason to reach out.
“Attending Sunshine Recovery Café or Sunrise Recovery Café often leaves individuals with a smile when they leave.”
